What a long, but super-fun day. I have taken some time to just relax, and attended a wonderful multi-media class this morning, given by Denise van Deventer, then went to see Colin, and then went out with some friends.
Colin is looking good, and I think he can’t wait for Monday so the next phase can begin. He is feeling really, really bored.
Something about
I am going tomorrow at 3, and some of his sisters are going, so the roster is full for then, but he said he thought he would need an interpreter so he could speak to them HA HA HA.
We had a wonderful voice-activated app suggestion from his boss, but Colin and I discussed it (well, more like me trying to lip read, some spelling, and some frustration) but he says his voice will not sound normal. I don’t know if that will be an issue, but I am still hoping for so many things to heal, so we are not yet anywhere near giving up.
He is looking so much better, and he even gave me a wonderful smile today:
Here is some information about the mixed media pieces we did:
We did techniques using 3 different resists – gel medium, gesso, and acrylic paint through stencils. I liked the gel medium because it was glossy and see-through and had a sort of different effect than the gesso which was white and resisted more fully, and then the acrylic paint which was much flatter, but also very useful if you are in a hurry as it dried more quickly. The slowest to dry was the gel medium but I really liked it the best for what we did today.
We also did different ways of using colour – some acrylic paint, some all-purpose ink, and of course – my favourite – distress ink.
Some photos are ones Denise made, some are some Lynne made, and some are one I made.
Mine are not completed yet as we made so many.
Here is mine with the gel medium and distress ink in various stages of incompleteness.

The wing shapes were covered with gesso roughly to give texture, and then covered here and there with all purpose ink.
This was mine with the gesso with distress ink:
You can see the depth of the edges of gesso – and the shine under the colour. It looks really lovely.
Here are a few of mine using acrylic paint as a resist:

(this one is finished with the flowers and leaves).
Here are the ones that Lynne made – they are wonderful. you can’t really see, but she has some shimmer on the blue and purple one with the butterflies which I just love.

and here are the ones from Denise. She had many different examples of backgrounds, and she just knows how to mix the perfect colour combinations and layering:
